Where were you in 1986? Ronald Reagan was president. William Perry and the Chicago Bears enjoyed “The Super Bowl Shuffle.” The Dow Jones Industrial Average was under 2,000. Johnny Lang was 5 years old. And Blind Willie’s was opening its doors in Virginia-Highland. More than 6,500 nights of live music later, Blind Willie’s celebrated its 18th anniversary this year, and the Blind Willie’s house band, the Shadows, still backs many of the performers. Co-founders Eric King and Roger Gregory (who doubles as Shadows’ bassist) built the club, literally, with carpentry and painting support from local musicians, among them Chicago Bob Nelson and guitarists J.T. Speed and Michael Catalano. “It was a real musicians’ project,” King recalls.“They worked their butts off. They just wanted a place to play.” King and Gregory discovered almost immediately that crowds were hungry for blues bands. The booking strategy filled a need not only for fans but for performers, providing one-nighter opportunities to touring bands.

Shorty’s Wood Fired Pizza
Welcome to Shorty’s! We have been in business since 2005 when we opened our first location in North Druid Hills. A little while later we opened our Tucker location on Lawrenceville Hwy. People often wonder what our secret to success is and why we thrive. Well, it isn’t a secret as much as it is common sense. We have a simple take on how to run a restaurant: use fresh ingredients to make tasty food and serve it with a smile. This basic concept is why we have a loyal gang of customers who call Shorty’s “home” several nights a week. Don’t believe it’s that simple?
Then stop by one of our locations and we will prove it to you!

This old 1868 farm house was the home of the Groggens family and then the Crooks family. In 1975 until 2000, it was turned into a restaurant and was known as the Marietta Cupboard. From August 2000 and until 2004, it was known as The Back Porch Bar & Grill. From 2005 to the present, it became NIKS PLACE serving authentic Greek food. This old house is one of the few historic homes in Marietta operating as a business outside the Square. To some it is a reminder of a bygone era in today’s corporate world. As for me, being a newcomer to Marietta (since 1994) and coming from a real ancient city as Athens Greece, I have learned to appreciate and admire the craftsmanship of the past. I love the history, nostalgia, and character this old house offers.

We respect and admire their music and feel as if we are members of their extended family yet still respect and admire their personal families without infringing or imposing on their private lives. Mississippi outlawed alcohol in 1907 and in 1966 became the last state to repeal prohibition. Fast forward 104 years and two fine gents, Austin Evans and Richard Patrick, fired up the state’s first legal still. Along with a passion for fine spirits, these gents have a thirst for Mississippi’s live music, folk art and writings. When the boys aren’t making hooch, you might spot ‘em at a juke joint, soaking up inspiration for their next batch of goodness from Cathead.
