WABE 90.1 FM Announces New Weekend Program
American Routes, Sundays at 7 pm

This two-hour program is hosted by Nick Spitzer, a folklorist and professor of anthropology at Tulane University. American Routes brings “a broad range of American music – blues and jazz, gospel and soul, rockabilly and country, Cajun and swamp pop, Tejano, Latin… and beyond. Songs and stories from musicians describe a deep and diverse nation with sounds and styles shared by all Americans.”

Nick Spitzer was inducted into the Folk DJ Hall of Fame at the Folk Alliance International conference held in New Orleans in January.Spitzer, who is also a former Louisiana State folklorist, documentary record, film, festival and exhibit producer, and veteran of underground and college radio, created and hosts “American Routes.” Enhancing its cultural exploration, the program also presents documentary features and artist interviews.

“‘DJ’ or ‘disc jockey’ is a 1950s vernacular term for what now may be a radio host or documentary producer. I just smile and say, ‘I’m a Ph.DJ.’”
